HANOI: Vietnamese companies took in 11.5% more money from surimi exports to Japan, year on year, during the first five months of the year, reports the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters (VASEP). The export value totaled $13.9 million.
Vietnam occupied 7% of the surimi import market share in Japan through May, data from the International Trade Center shows.
Japan is the birthplace of surimi and remains the largest market for consumption, the newspaper said.
It noted that the Japanese yen’s weakness against the dollar may cause limitations for the country’s ability to purchase pollock surimi.
“Therefore, it is likely that Japanese will switch to tropical surimi,” VASEP said, referring to the type of surimi produced in Vietnam.
