HANOI: Vietnam imported 404,446 mt of wheat in April, more than double the volume imported in March and up 164.8% year on year, customs data released Friday showed. Over January-April the country imported 1.26 million mt, up 64.78% year on year, the data showed. The increase was spurred by growth in its fast food and feed sectors, sources said.
Vietnam, the second largest buyer of Australian wheat after Indonesia, bought 654,144 mt of Australian wheat over January-April — almost double its consumption — as it had a pricing advantage over other major origins due to a weaker Australian currency from January to early March. In contrast, a stronger US currency in Q1 decreased the attractiveness of US origin wheat, with Vietnam’s import volume over January-April) almost halving from the year before.
