VLC announces stable version for Android in Google Play

NEW YORK: The VideoLAN team, which manages VLC, has released the launch of the stable version of VLC for Android in Google Play.

The stable VLC doesn’t replace the existing beta version and will co-exist with it, the latter is likely to get new features and enhancements first.

According to the Google Play listing of the app, the Android version of the media player is the port of the desktop version. VLC for Android can play most video and audio files, as well as network streams and DVD ISOs, like the desktop version of VLC.

VideoLAN also notes that the VLC for Android also packs an Android TV version of the application, so Android TV users now have another great option to play media files.

VLC for Android features:

  • All formats are supported, including MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, Ogg, FLAC, TS, M2TS and AAC. No extra codec necessary.
  • Includes a media library for audio and video files, and allows to browse folders directly.
  • Support for multi-track audio and subtitles
  • Also supports auto-rotation, aspect-ratio adjustments and gestures to control volume, brightness and seeking.
  • Widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, cover art and a complete audio media library
