LAHORE: Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) added 28.472 million more units of electricity to the national grid on May 31, taking the number of units to 132.642 million as compared to 104.17 million units of last year.
The additional contribution comes on the back of extra water released from dams by the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on demand of provinces.
The primary purpose of dams is to store water that can be used for agriculture, whereas hydel electricity is a mere by-product of the process. Electricity generation from hydel power stations operated by Wapda depends upon water indents of Irsa. Wapda delivers more than 30 billion units of low-cost electricity to the national grid per annum.
