Wapda announces to build 12 dams in least-developed cities

ISLAMABAD: Wapda has announced to build 12 small and medium dams to conserve water in least-developed cities.

Official sources told the state-owned news agency that in first phase 12 dams including Darawat dam, Nai Gaj, Naulong dam, Winder dam, Hingol dam, Garuk dam, Pelar dam, Ghabir dam, Papin dam, Bara dam, Daraban dam and Tank Zam dam were under different stages of planning, award and construction. They said that the basic purpose of these dams was water conservation and irrigation. However, it would also help generate limited cheap hydel power, they added.

The sources said that out of these 12 dams, five dams were proposed to be constructed in Balochistan. These dams included Naulong dam, Winder dam, Hingol dam, Garuk dam and Pelar dam.

The provincial government was also implementing small dams through federal government financial assistance in various areas of Balochistan. Under Package-I, 20 small dams have already been completed while 26 more such dams were under implementation under Package-II.
