Wapda awards Rs2.84b contract of Kachhi canal project

LAHORE: M/s China Guangxi Corporation and Ramzan & Sons (Pvt) Limited have won a Rs2,848 million contract to construct a 13-kilometre Kachhi canal.

The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has awarded the contract to the said companies for construction of main canal, earthwork, lining and remaining works of structures (3R) stretching over phase-1 of Kachhi Canal Project, which would be completed by June 30, 2015.

The contract was signed between Wapda and M/s China Guangxi Corporation (JV) here in a ceremony at Wapda House. GM (Central) Water Ghulam Abbas Anjum and Mansoor Ramzan Baloch signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations. Wapda Chairman Zafar Mahmood, Member (Water) Muhammad Shoaib Iqbal, Member (Power) Badrul Munir Murtiza, Member (Finance) Anwar-ul-Haq were also present during the contract signing ceremony.

Wapda Chairman Zafar Mahmood termed the Kachhi Canal Project (Phase-1) as a mega project of vital importance for socio-economic development of the country. He said that the project holds a unique significance for the province of Balochistan. He said that major problem faced by Balochistan is water shortage, adding that the project would usher in a new era of prosperity in the province through irrigated agriculture. Executive Engineer (Balochistan Irrigation Department) Sheikh Zaman Ali was also present on the occasion and he appreciated the efforts of Wapda for timely completion of the project.
