KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat stressed upon implementation of web-based automated customs services to meet challenges of dynamic and changing characteristics of international trade.
He highlighted the need for making advancement in the use of information technology in customs procedures.
“Revenue collection from customs is increasing by the year. The use of technology too is increasing. But still, there are some leakages in our system.
To counter them, there is a need for making further technological advancements,” Mahat said at an event organised by the Department of Customs to celebrate the 63rd International Customs Day.
He added the administration should not only keep tabs on the trading of physical goods, but also the trading that happens through electronic channels. Stating the business climate in the country has started improving, the minister said better facilitation of customs services is a must for attracting investment. Chief Commissioner at National Information Commission Krishna Hari Baskota stressed on the need for adopting web-based customs functioning. “A separate department should be established to look into the IT tasks at the customs department. Adequate equipment and infrastructure should be provided by the government,” said Baskota, who is former Director General at the Department of Customs.
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Pradeep Jung Pandey said although there has been a remarkable improvement in the customs service, further improvement is needed.
“In some cases, customs tariff on readymade goods is higher compared to that on the raw materials,” he said. “This should be changed.”
Director General at the Department of Customs Sishir Kumar Dhungana said the department was focused on increased use of technology.
