WASHINGTON: The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it recorded the sum of N269.6 million in the month of May 2016 alone. The Customs Area Controller, Yusuf Umar who disclosed this to The Tide in Lagos said the development was in line with the vision of the comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hammed Abrahim Ali (Rtd) to build a well equipped marine customs capable to defend the Nigerian maritime domain.
According to Umar, the amount was recorded from the landmark seizure of 575 bags of 50kg imported rice and 26 bags of cannabis seized along the Badagry creeks in Lagos.
Umar said the officers of the command in Badagry station acted on a tip off while patrolling the creeks at the Badagry-Benin Republic axis of Tanfi Island when they ran into a boat carrying 20 Jumbo bags of cannabis suspected to be Indian hemp parked at the harbor meant to be smuggled into Nigeria.
The controller hinted that the team security called for re-enforcement of the Nigeria Navy, who responded immediately and assisted in conveying the suspected drugs to the customs marine headquarters, Ibaton Apapa in Lagos. He disclosed that no arrest was made, but that the cannabis weighing 375kg was valued at N100 million. Umar noted that the fight against smuggling had received tremendous filling from the Navy.
The controller disclosed that the command had made several seizures in the year 2016, valued at N260,478,050.00 with Duty Paid Value (DPV) at N265,186,450.00. This is against a total of 13 seizures valued at N6,575,790.00 and a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N8,008,003.00 made in the same period of 2015.
In the space of 10 days, we have been able to make another seizure of 575 bags of rice with a DPV of N4,447,625.00 valued at N2,616,250.00. I can confirm to you that the success is due to logistic support of the comptroller General of Customs, Col Muhammed Ali (Rtd), to the command in meeting its goals, especially in line with his zero-tolerance for smuggling. We are all expected to justify the confidence the Controller General of Customs and his management team reposed on us by putting our best in the interest of Nigerians. We must not leave on the past glory of our achievement recorded”
