DELHI: Whats-app is now working on developing a way to make backing up chat history an easier process for its users.
Leaked strings from WhatsApp developers group suggest that it will soon integrate with Google Drive to backup chat history and media files. Users will also be able to restore history from Google Drive.
Android Police reports that a leaked screenshot from the developer group’s string shows a timestamp for last backup to the Drive and an option to delete it.
The report also says that media backup option does not include backup and restore for video files. Users will only be able back up data on Google Drive through a Wi-Fi or cellular network.
Unlike iOS users, who store chat history via iCloud, WhatsApp users at the moment manually transfer the backup folder from the old phone to the new one.
Based on the text, the backup function involves backing up chat history and media except video files. Users who need to back up their videos must therefore look for another way to do it. The restoring function is offered only once, when the app is launched on a new device. Users who are keen on restoring their chat message should accept the offer since the old backup will be gone if the user doesn’t accept.
There is no information yet on when the feature will be released. It should be noted that the Google Drive integration means that the feature initially only works with Android devices. Perhaps the developer will add iCloud support for iPhone users, although that would be a totally different story.
