The total wheat imports by rail, river, sea and coastwise into the ports of Karachi, Bombay, and Calcutta for the week ending May 8, as complied by the Director of Statistics, were 61,841 tons, as against 11,392 tons for the corresponding week of last year, and 62,206 tons, the average for the same period of the three previous years.
The total exports abroad were 25,605 tons, as against 2,480 tons for the corresponding period of last year, and 35,847 tons, the average for the same period of the three pervious years.
The imports of wheat from 1st April to 8th May into the ports of Bombay, Karachi and Calcuttar, as complied from these weekly statements, were respectively 43,553 tons, 59,894 tons, and 36,549 tons, or an increase of 153 per cent on the total imports of the corresponding period of last year.
The exports of wheat from April 1 to May 8 from the ports were: Bombay 22,292 tons, Karachi 32,887 tons, and Calcutta 2,595 tons; or an increase of 15 per cent on the total exports of the corresponding period of last year.
