WASHINGTON: A new study says women in the workplace are often colder than men. A study in the Nature Climate Change journal looked at energy use in officers. The temperature inside offices is largely driven by the metabolic rate of the men within it, according to the study. Women typically have lower metabolisms and therefore tend to get cold at temperatures men find comfortable.
Researchers put 16 women in a sealed chamber for 45 minutes, one-by-one, while they studied, read and worked on computers. Meanwhile, the chamber measured inhalations and exhalations a good proxy for metabolic rates.
The study’s authors urge a reduction in “gender-discriminating bias” in determining office temperatures, which would also decrease energy consumption.
