World Bank to support Karachi’s infrastructure development’

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Administrator Laeeq Ahmed has said the World Bank has assured support and cooperation in long-term and short-term infrastructure development projects for metropolis and every positive and constructive recommendation for the betterment of the city would be welcomed.

He expressed these views after meeting with a delegation of World Bank that was represented by a financial analyst Rebecca Hrvatin, project director and lead analytical manager for Asia and Pacific, Anna Hughes, Associate Director YeeFarm Phua and others called on him, said a statement.

The KMC was represented by the Financial Adviser, Afaq Mirza, Municipal Services Senior Director Masood Alam and other officers attended the meeting. Laeeq Ahmed said the visit of the delegation of World Bank experts was in connection with the Karachi Transformation Strategy (KTS) on which the bank was working with the objective to transform Karachi into green, resilient metropolitan city and conducting different studies including Fiscal Management Assessment for Karachi.

He said Karachi was not only one of the world’s mega cities and Pakistan’s biggest city with various estimates placing the population of metropolitan region in excess of 20 million but it was also the country’s economic powerhouse adding that to a large extent the nation’s growth was closely linked to the Karachi’s ability to leverage the productivity gains associated with urbanisation.
