CANADA: The research team from the Autonomous University of Madrid has found that yogurt doesn’t have a positive effect on health even though the dairy product has been highly recommended for years. The study is published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietrics in which researchers evaluated the link between yogurt intake and mental and physical improvements in body. The survey included 4,445 Spanish adults who were followed by researchers. They analyzed chanegs in their quality of health as they consumed yogurt but found that it didn’t have any positive impact on health-related quality of life.
“The regular consumption of yogurt was not linked to health-related quality of life,” states lead author Esther López-García, of the Autonomous University of Madrid. “For future research more specific instruments must be used which may increase the probability of finding a potential benefit of this food.”
In Spain, where researchers conducted the study, the major dietary guidelines are in favour of yogurt intake. Some have also linked it to lower risk of type 2 diabetes along with other health benefits.
“This is because the majority of studies have focused on the effect as a whole, but it would be interesting to evaluate the independent association between each type of product and global health indicators,” suggests López-García.
