KARACHI: A division bench of Sindh High Court (SHC), headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abassi, has asked the DIG Traffic Police and Motorway Police officer to inform the court about measures taken to remove substandard gas cylinders and kits from public transport vehicles.
The SHC bench, taking up a petition filed by United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, has issued notice to the above said official. Rana Faizul Hassan representing Rights body submitted several people had lost their lives due to use of substandard gas cylinders in public transport, but authorities concerned failed taking any action against such traffic violations. He pleaded court to order removal of substandard cylinders and government-verified cylinders/CNG kits used by public and private transport to avoid accidents.
Earlier, bench had observed time and again it had issued directives for removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits but no positive steps appeared to have been taken by the provincial authorities.
It is pertinent to mention that after losing 12 lives in an accident this week, Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui had started crackdown against intercity transporters violating the rules and installing sub-standard CNG cylinders.
During crackdown, two persons were arrested and four inter-city passenger vans were impounded and charged Rs25,000 as fine near Taj Complex, Saddar over installing sub-standard CNG cylinder and unavailability of emergency exit gate in the vehicles, by the officials concerned.
