2 arrested in separate drug smuggling attempts

ARIZONA: Two were arrested this weekend at the international border in Nogales, Arizona in separate attempts to smuggle more than $822,500 worth of heroin and cocaine, authorities said.

On Sunday, more than 37 pounds of heroin and more than four pounds of cocaine were found in a Chevrolet Malibu at the DeConcini crossing by Customs and Border Protection officers, according to a news release.

A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers during a secondary inspection of the vehicle that was driven by a woman from Mexico. The drugs were valued at more than $704,000, officials said. The woman was turned over to federal authorities, and her car and the drugs were seized.

On Saturday, a teen was taken into custody at the Mariposa crossing after officers found nearly seven pounds of heroin in his laptop computer, a keyboard and other belongings, authorities said. The heroin was valued at more than $118,500.

The findings occurred during a secondary inspection of a Tufesa passenger bus. The teen, who is a U.S. citizen, was turned over to federal authorities and the drugs were seized.
