2-day workshop: US experts share techniques with CCP staff to detect cartels, deceptive marketing practices

KARACHI: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), in collaboration with the USAID, US Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Programme (CLDP) and US FTC, has conducted a two-day workshop on Competition Law for its professional staff to build capacity of its officials in key enforcement areas ie investigating cartel agreements, abuse of dominance, merger review, deceptive marketing and to enable them to learn from international best practices.

During the workshop, the experts of United States (US) Federal Trade Commission (FTC) shared with the CCP officials, the analytical techniques and practices deployed by the US FTC for detecting/investigating cartels, deceptive marketing practices and abuse of dominant position.

US FTC is the US federal agency responsible for anti-trust and consumer protection. The workshop was conducted by experts from the FTC Russell Damtoft, Associate Director, (Office of International Affairs) and Krisztian Katona, Counsel for International Anti-trust.

Damtoft presented the analysis deployed by the FTC in identifying and investigating cartels and dealing with deceptive marketing practices. Katona focused on how to identify instances where a firm was abusing its dominant position and merger review. The international experts shared the analytical techniques and practices deployed by the US FTC, which could also be adopted by the CCP.

Vadiyya Khalil, Chairperson CCP, thanked Joe Yang, Attorney Advisor, CLDP and the experts from US FTC for organising the training and hoped that such collaboration between the two agencies would continue in the future. The Chairperson awarded certificates to the participants of the workshop
