KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has pointed out a power gap of over 5,500MW between supply and demand. It was stated that the situation would be improved by 2019/20.
The Nepra State of Industry report issued on Monday recommended more gas to the power sector is diverted, whereas gas supplies to those industrial units, which are also generating and selling power inefficiently, be curtailed so that uneconomic use and wastage of a scarce resource of the country is controlled.
The regulator has also advised the quarters concerned that liquefied natural gas (LNG) price be set after detailed analysis of different alternatives, while renewable energy-based projects may be inducted after carrying out technical studies to assess their performance in the integrated transmission system.
Nepra has underlined timely completion of large coal-based and hydropower project is critical for the recovery of the power sector.
