$9.6m contract: CAA to install latest radars in 18 months to double air traffic

KARACHI: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has signed an MoU with a Spanish company Inda to install the latest radars in the country in the next 18 months.

CAA Deputy Director General Air Vice Marshal Khawar Hussain and the Vice President of Spanish company ‘Indra’, Francisco Navarro signed the contract.

Air Vice Marshal Khawar said the provision of navigational facilities to the airlines was a major source of foreign exchange for the authority. “Installation of new radars will not only double Pakistan’s air traffic but it will also increase the CAA’s revenue,” he added.

According to the contract of $9.6 million, in the first phase the primary and secondary radars at Jinnah International Airport Karachi and Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore will be replaced with the new ones. Radars at other locations will also be changed within next 18 months.

Talking to the media, CAA Deputy Director General Air Vice Marshal Khawar Hussain said installation of new radar system would not only improve the quality of coverage and increase the safety of flights but will also double Pakistan’s air traffic.
