KARACHI: The Sindh sugarcane growers have rejected official spot price of Rs172 per 40kg, which they had proposed earlier.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has also taken personal interest in the matter and held separate meetings with sugarcane growers and millers.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association had said that the official price of Rs155 was reasonable as the price of sugarcane in the international and local markets have fallen to Rs46 per kilogramme.

The chief minister has decided to give a subsidy of Rs12 per 40 kilogrammes to the growers even though this would have incurred a burden of Rs4 billion on the provincial exchequer.

However, the growers backed out of the offer and stated that they would accept Rs172 if the earlier notification for fixing the price at Rs182 per 40 kilogramme was not withdrawn by the Sindh government.
