KARACHI: The Directorate General of Customs Valuation has revised the customs values of black pepper and white pepper vide Valuation Ruling 743/2015.

It may be mentioned here that it was brought to the notice of Directorate General by  a field formation that black pepper and white pepper were being imported at under-invoiced values, which prompted the department to initiate an exercise to correctly determine customs value of the goods under Section 25-A of the Customs Act, 1969.

Meetings were held with the representatives of importers, the Clearance Collectorates, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and trade bodies held on May 20, May 26 and June 9 to deliberate the correct customs values.

The importers pointed out that values were dependent on quality, size of grain, aroma and availability in market.

It was later decided that black pepper (whole) under PCT 0904.1110 of Vietnam, Madagascar, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and Brazil will be assessed for duty and taxes at $4.3 per kg. Black pepper (whole) under PCT 0904.1110 of all other origins will be assessed at $4.5 per kg.

Moreover, white pepper (whole) under PCT 0904.1120 of Vietnam, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka will assessed for duty and taxes at $4.7 per kg, while those under PCT 0904.1120 of all other origins would be assessed at $4.9 per kg.
