PTCL evaded billions of rupees in duties and taxes: Asif Marghoob

Customs Intelligence Director Asif Marghoob Siddiqui says recovery of almost Rs 2 billion likely soon

KARACHI: Tax and duty evasion to the tune of more than Rs 4 billion has been detected by Karachi region’s Customs Intelligence and Investigation-FBR against only one company, M/s PTCL.

This was disclosed by Customs Intelligence Director Asif Marghoob Siddiqui while talking exclusively to Customs Today.

He said that this amount has been detected during the last 16 months, and hoped that recovery in this regard would be made soon.

Asif Marghoob Siddiqui further disclosed that a couple of months back, even the Sindh High Court was pleased to issue a cheque of more than Rs 261 million in a pending litigation following a judgement from Customs Tribunal  Karachi that was passed against the PTCL.

Karachi region’s Customs Intelligence-FBR director also commended his team members who defended the case against the PTCL before the Adjudication-I collector and hoped that they would continue working with more dedication in the future.

It may be mentioned here that recently Customs Adjudication-I Collector Dr Fareed Iqbal Qureshi upheld a contravention case against the PTCL, made by the directorate general of Intelligence and Investigation-FBR, Regional Office Karachi, and established the case of evasion of customs duties and other taxes amounting to Rs 1,977,613,210 by the PTCL, Islamabad.

The collector also imposed a penalty of Rs 50 million on M/s PTCL, Rs 10 million on M/s Huawei Technologies Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd and Rs 5 million on the clearing agent.
