OTTAWA: The U.S. Coast Guard took custody of five U.S. citizens who were rescued from a sailboat that capsized off the coast of Fort Erie by Canadian officials.
The U.S. Coast Guard was not involved in the rescue of those aboard the capsized boat, but confirmed that it took custody of the U.S. citizens after their rescue by Canadians officials. The rescue took place before the U.S. Coast Guard was even contacted, an official from the agency said.
“What we did was, after the case was over we returned U.S. citizens back the (United) States,” he said.
Niagara Regional Police and Canada Customs could not be reached for additional information on the rescue.
The U.S. Coast Guard officials said they were asked by the Canadian government to take custody of the U.S. citizens as a courtesy because the return of the five was done without extradition and cleared by the U.S. Coast Guard through U.S. Border Patrol instead.
