LAHORE: Smuggling of goods into Pakistan from neighbouring countries is badly affecting local industry, Ferozepur Road traders told Customs Today on Wednesday.
They said smuggling of plastic, HD, PVC, sanitary wares and ceramic tiles was badly affecting the local producers and sellers.
They added they were facing huge losses due to smuggling of ceramic tiles.
“The smuggled tile is available in market for only Rs 200 to 250 per foot far less cheaper than the local tile.”
Manufacturers of Gujranwala and Lahore are forced to close their businesses because of heavy losses because the smuggled ceramic tile is available on a 3- to 4-month credit, they said.
Smugglers are making their place in the local market by providing attracted benefits to the dealers. Gas load shedding is another problem for the manufacturers of ceramic tiles because most of its processing is done at a high temperature. Gas shortage in winter decreases the total production up to 50 percent.
Custom officials said, “We are always available to serve the nation and if we find any application in this regard we take prompt action. We aim at eliminating smuggling at all costs.”
They advised the dealers and manufacturers to inform the department if they find smuggled goods being sold in the local market.
