KARACHI: Customs Adjudication-I Collector Abdul Basit Chaudhary has issued a show cause notice to Syed Abdul Nafay in a case pertaining to the smuggling of Iranian currency to Pakistan without any legal documents.
The collector fixed the hearing of the said case on March 30, 2016.
It has been reported by the Model Customs Collectorate Preventive vide its Contravention Report No.ASO-2015/2016-HQ that on January 21, 2016, a passenger bus bearing registration number JB-5058 coming from Quetta was stopped for checking at customs check point near RCD Highway.
During checking a plastic bag wrapped with adhesive tape was recovered from the luggage cabinet of the said passenger bus. Cursory search of the bundle carried out in the presence of witnesses namely as Sepoy Muhammad Shamim and Sepoy Muhammad Asif Ali, resulted in the recovery of 109 packets containing Iranian currency worth 1,041,700,000 equivalent to Rs 3.958 million.
During the investigation, the accused passenger was identified as Syed Abdul Nafay who had claimed the ownership of the foreign currency. When the he was asked to produce the valid documents to carry the big amount of Iranian currency, he could not produce any document.
Therefore, the recovered consignment of foreign currency was taken into the possession and brought to the Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO) headquarters along with arrested person.
During investigation, it was found that the arrested accused violated the Section 2(s) and 16 of the Customs Act, 1969, punishable under clause (89) of Section 156(1)ibid and was served with a notice under Section 171 of the customs act.
Subsequently, the contravention report was forwarded to the Customs Adjudication-I for further legal formalities.
