Customs Court sends cell phones’ smuggler on physical remand

ISLAMABAD: The Special Court of Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling has sent a suspect of cell phones smuggler on physical remand for one day.

Accused person, Amjad Javed, was arrested by the customs officials at Islamabad airport when he was trying to smuggle 336 cell phones into Pakistan without payment of leviable duty/taxes.

On Tuesday, Amjad was produced before the Customs Court seeking his physical remand for a week, but Special Judge Rana Aftab approved only one-day remand stating that the customs has recovered cell phones; therefore, there was no need to send the accused on seven-day remand.

During investigation, the officials found that the accused has an overseas national identify card. He has been travelling to Islamabad and Peshawar on May 4 and April 28 respectively from Dubai.

The accused revealed during interrogation that he brought different items, including cell phones, cloth etc into Pakistan.

The Investigation and Prosecution officials has received his mobile phone data and started searching of his accomplices.
