Sialkot Customs prevents smuggling of Rs1.6m cumin seeds

SIALKOT: The Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) of the Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) Sialkot has seized a huge quantity of smuggled Indian origin cumin seeds worth Rs1.6million at Sarai Alamgir under the Kashmir Transit Trade from a Mazda Truck.

Collector Customs Ahmed Reza Khan received a tip-off by an informer that a Mazada Truck with registration No: LES-5688 uploaded with smuggled Indian origin cumin seeds is coming from Mirpur (AJK). The collector ordered Assistant Collector and Incharge ASO Ali Mohatashim Minhas to impound the said Mazada Truck. Under the directions of the ASO Incharge, Superintendent Sardar Manzoor constituted a team under the supervision of Inspector Nazar Hussain and Aftab Ahmed.

They started checking vehicles on Grand Trunk Road (GTR) from Wazirabad To Kharian. The said inspectors along with their team intercepted the said truck about which information was carried over by the informer. The team recovered 249 bags of Indian origin cumin seeds valued Rs. 1.6 million. The team asked Driver Shahzaib Ahmed about the documents of custom paid duty but he failed to prove the status of the item. The driver told the team that cumin seeds were uploaded from the truck stand of Mirpur (AJK) and he knows nothing.

The team seized cumin seeds and shifted the bags to the store room of the MCC Sialkot and released Driver with Mazada Truck after proper interrogation. The team has registered a case under Section 157/158 of customs bylaws. The team will refer the case to the adjudication court for proceeding. If learned court will announce judgment in favour of the MCC Sialkot then the MCC will auction off the item under the Customs Act-1969.
