Customs Court awards imprisonment to suspect involved in mobile phones smuggling

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has awarded 14 days imprisonment and Rs 100,000 fine to the suspect, Mujahid Ahmed Khan, on pleading guilty. In case the accused has failed to submit fine amount than he will suffer further three  months simple imprisonment. The accused was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband mobile phones from Sharjah and caught at Jinnah International Airport Karachi.

During the hearing, counsel for the accused filed an application for pleading guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court. After the arguments, the court awarded 14 days imprisonment and Rs 100,000 to the suspect.

According to the prosecution, the staff of the Anti-Smuggling Organization intercepted the accused and recovered non-customs duty paid mobile phones of Samsung brand Assorted 120 nos, LG Brand 45 nos, Vega Brand 3 nos, Sol Brand 3 nos, China (without brand name) 3 nos and one shoulder bag of black color as container from his possession worth Rs 180,96, 000 from him.

The Investigation Officer had informed the court that said accused had not produced lawful documents of the said mobile phones, therefore, after the formalities; staff of the customs department seized the said mobile phones and arrested him. Therefore case was registered against in violation of section 2 (s) and 16 of the Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) of section 156 (1) ibid read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666 (1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 & section 3 (iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act.
