Customs Court awards imprisonment to suspect arrested in mobile phones smuggling case

KARACHI: Customs Taxation and Anti-Smuggling Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 10 days imprisonment and Rs 100,000 fine to accused namely Sunil Kumar son of Tillu Ram who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggled/ non-duty paid mobile phones from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, the suspect appeared before the court along with his counsel and filed an application for pleading guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court.

After the arguments, the court awarded 10 days imprisonment (already undergone period) and Rs1,00,000 fine to him, in default payment of fine, he shall suffer further three months simple imprisonment in Central Jail Karachi.

According to the prosecution, dated March 27, 2017 officials of the customs department intercepted the accused and during examination of his baggage, recovered I-Phones 7 numbers, smart phones 140 numbers tentative value of Rs17,47,200.

As per FIR, when accused was asked the produced lawful documents of the above goods, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, after the formalities, accused was arrested and goods were seized by model Customs Collectorate Customs House Karachi.

Case was registered in violation of section 2(s) 16 and 139 of the customs act, 1969 punishable under clauses (8) (9) & 161 of the baggage rules, 2006 notified vide SRO-666(1)/2006 dated 28/06/2006 and Import & Export (Control) Act 1950.
