LAHORE: The import of bananas and lemons from India has slowed down due to their bad quality and increase of supply of the local crop in the country.
Pakistan had started import of Indian lemons and bananas through Land Freight Unit of Wagha from the start of May but their quality was not up to the mark. All the consignments imported from India were found fungal.
The local traders of vegetable markets in Lahore have stopped purchasing the said items. Due to some earlier import of fungal lemons and bananas, the importers had to face a big financial loss as well. Now the producers of lemon from Sindh on Thursday have also protested against the sale of Indian crop in the markets of Lahore.
On the other hand, few importers of Pakistan had started the import of Indian mangoes through Land Freight Unit Wagha in view of the rising demand of mangoes in the local market of Pakistan, especially Punjab, because of late arrival of local mangoes. Now that has also stopped because new crop of Pakistan has reached the market.
Meanwhile, about five to eight trucks of mangoes are crossing the border on daily basis. After the start of import of lemons, the Pakistan Customs will also earn more duty and taxes.
