Customs Court approves physical remand of suspect booked in smuggling of goods

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect Muhammad Samar son of Muhammad Ali to customs preventive on physical remand, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid contraband goods.

On February 8, 2019 investigation officer of customs preventive produced above-mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on actionable information, customs officials intercepted a truck bearing registration no NHA-712 and recovered 5,000 kg betel nuts worth Rs3,750,000.

He further informed the court that suspect was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, he was arrested and goods were seized by customs officials. He argued that prosecution needs further investigation from him for arrest of other culprits involved in this case, therefore, court may send him back.

After the hearing, the court sent him on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clauses 89 and 85 of Section 156 (1) read with section 3 of Import & Export Control Act, 1950.
