Customs Court sends driver to customs lock-up booked in foreign origin fabric smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved physical remand of suspect namely Inamullah son of Abdul Qahir and sent him back to customs department who is booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid polyester dyed fabric, betel nuts etc.

On October 19, 2019, investigation officer produced the above mentioned suspect before the court and informed that on actionable information, Anti-Smuggling Organization (ASO) intercepted Daewoo passenger bus Al-Habib coach bearing registration number: LES-6300 and during the search found 1207 kg betel nuts valuing of Rs603,500. 1332 yards micro velvet 500gm cloth valuing of Rs204,744. 3120 yards polyester dyed fabric made in China worth Rs192,875. 1020 yards un-dyed (gray) cloth worth Rs56,250,  2 Ovation brand tyres made in China worth Rs80,000.

He further disclosed that no-one claimed ownership of the said goods, therefore, customs team arrested the bus driver and also seized the said bus, he submitted that prosecution needs further investigation from said accused, therefore, court may grant his physical remand. After the hearing, court approved his physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce him on next date of hearing along with progress report.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under section 2(s) 157 (2) of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause (89) of section 156 (i) ibid read with section 156 (2) of the Customs Act, 1969 further read with section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
