LAHORE: The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has set a new benchmark in its revenue collection efforts, announcing a record Rs26 billion in sales tax on services during May 2025.

This achievement represents an impressive 23% increase compared to the same month last year, underscoring the Authority’s growing efficiency and unwavering commitment to tax collection across the province.

A PRA spokesperson has said that the cumulative collection for the period from July 2024 to May 2025 now stands at Rs240 billion, reflecting a solid 16% year-on-year increase. This robust performance is seen as a major step forward in the Authority’s ongoing efforts to streamline and digitize tax collection mechanisms throughout Punjab.

Key revenue streams show strong growth

Of the total revenue collected, Rs225 billion originated from Punjab Sales Tax, consistently demonstrating annual growth in this critical segment. The PRA also reported a collection of Rs5.6 billion under the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess, which itself saw an 18% increase from the previous fiscal period.

Furthermore, the Punjab Workers Welfare Fund contributed a notable Rs9.3 billion, marking a significant 30% rise compared to the same period last year.

Crucially, this substantial growth in sales tax collection has been achieved without the introduction of any new taxes or adjustments to existing tax rates. The PRA attributes its success to a comprehensive enforcement strategy coupled with the adoption of advanced technology tools. These tools have played a pivotal role in enhancing taxpayer compliance and effectively broadening the tax base across various service sectors.

Efficient governance & future outlook

The Authority further emphasized that its strong performance in the sales tax sector is a testament to both efficient governance and increased taxpayer awareness regarding their obligations.

The PRA remains highly optimistic about exceeding its annual target by the end of the current fiscal year, aiming to achieve this through continued reforms and proactive engagement with service providers.

By maintaining a strong focus on transparency and modernization, the PRA continues to reinforce its vital role as a key driver in Punjab’s economic development through the effective and efficient collection of sales tax on services. Officials stated that future initiatives will primarily focus on further digital integration, strategically expanding the taxpayer base, and simplifying sales tax procedures to ensure sustained growth and a more taxpayer-friendly environment.
