ALGIERS: Sugar imports (raw beet, sugar cane, lactose and solid lactose syrup) fell to USD 714.76 million in 2015 against USD 861.04 million in 2014, Customs told APS. As for the quantity of sugar imports, it has slightly increased to 1.93 million tonnes (m/t) against 1.92 m/t, according to the Custom’s National Computing and Statistics Center (CNIS).
The cost of sugar imports fell by 17% in 2015 compared to the year before, while the volume of imports remained almost unchanged (+ 0.44%). The bill has decreased in the wake of the decline in import prices of brown and white sugar on world markets due to better sugarcane harvest than expected and a depreciation of the Brazilian currency against US dollar.
The import prices for raw sugar imported by Algeria has increased to USD 358/t during the first 10 months of 2015 against USD 430/t over the same period in 2014, while that of white sugar decreased to USD 506/ton against USD 622 in the same period, according to a recent analysis issued by the Trade Ministry.
