TORONTO: Border agents at Pearson airport intercepted a package with enough narcotics to make 53,000 doses of the date-rape drug.
“This is one of the largest seizures we have been involved in,” Toronto Police Const. Victor Kwong said. “Without this being caught, there could have been 53,000 potential victims.”
Two GTA men face drug charges after the bust on Nov. 25.
The package’s label said it contained cinnamyl acetate, which is legal and used to make cosmetic products. But tests showed it to be gamma-butyrolactone, a controlled substance and the only restricted ingredient to produce gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, known on the street as the date-rape drug.
That much gamma-butyrolactone could produce about $527,000 worth of the date-rape drug, police said.
The drug can last up to four hours and cause confusion and blackouts.
Ayron Borovic, 30, of Oshawa, is charged with two counts of possessing an illegal substance, possessing property obtained by crime, and possessing a prohibited weapon.
Malik Jadavji, 38, of Toronto, is charged with several counts of possessing illegal substances.
Both are scheduled to appear at Old City Hall court on Jan. 18.
