CBP officers seize marijuana, 7,800 rounds of ammunition

TUCSON:  Customs and Border Protection officers arrested two Arizona women during separate incidents this week at the Port of Douglas.CBP officers discovered 7,800 rounds of ammunition within the quarter panels of a smuggling vehicle, as well as concealed within a bag of dog food.

Officers arrested Ambar Esthela Morales, 23, of Tucson on April 29 after an outbound inspection of her Ford SUV led to the discovery of more than 7,800 rounds of ammunition used in AK-47 rifles, before they were able to go into Mexico. The rounds were hidden within the rear quarter panels as well as in a bag of dog food.Drug smugglers attempted to hide nearly 256 pounds of marijuana within a vehicle, to include underneath the hood and trunk as well as the spare tire.

Earlier this week (April 26), a CBP narcotics-detection canine also alerted officers to a Chrysler P/T Cruiser, driven by Christina Carrizoza, 36, of Douglas, Ariz. When officers inspected the vehicle, they found 237 packages of marijuana concealed throughout the vehicle and spare tire – nearly 256 pounds – worth nearly $128,000.

Officers seized all drugs and vehicles, and referred both subjects to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
