KARACHI: The Supreme Court directed counsel for Federal Board of Revenue to come prepare and submit para-wise comments on an appeal filed by chairman Federal Board of Revenue against reinstatement of appraiser Syed Javed Raza Naqvi, who was dismissed from service due to his involvement in smuggling of 196 luxury vehicles in the garb of amnesty scheme.
On March 25, 2019, a two-member bench, comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Munib Akhtar heard the appeal at Supreme Court Karachi Registry.
During the hearing, Dr. Raana Khan, Kafil Ahmed Abbasi was appeared on behalf of FBR and sought time to submit comments for next date of hearing, however, Justice Gulzar Ahmed directed them that no adjournment will be made and they have to argue.
Counsel for FBR argued that the above-named appraiser was involved in smuggling of 196 luxury vehicles and after investigation and inquiry, he was removed from service, however, he moved the tribunal which restored him on service, so the court may set aside tribunal’s order.
During the hearing, Justice Gulzar Ahmed raised the question that why only one appraiser was nominated in this scam and why not high officials were nominated and is it possible that luxury vehicles were imported without support of high officials of customs.
Justice Gulzar Ahmed also passed remarks that high officials of FBR are making money and appraiser made scapegoat. Justice Munib Akhtar remarked that applicant accepted that he was aware of importing of these vehicles which means he accepted his crime.
After the hearing, court directed parties to come prepare and submit their comments on next date of hearing.
