NEW YORK: An American automobile division of General Motors, Chevrolet has revealed that the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will be launched at a special event in Detroit on May 16, teasing the new coupe with the classic red, white and blue flag graphic that has appeared on past Chevrolet models.
“This will be an event Camaro fans will not want to miss,” Camaro marketing manager Todd Christensen said in a statement today.
“This is only the sixth time we have introduced an all-new Camaro. We wanted to share the moment with the customers and fans who have helped make Camaro both America’s favorite performance car for the past five years, and a cultural icon since 1967.”
Little has been revealed about the new sixth-generation Camaro, but Chevrolet has recently fired up the marketing campaign, and a pair of leaked images have also given fans an early hint of what to expect.
Likewise, a series of spy photos have delivered more than a few key views of the new model’s shape, although the finer details remain under wraps for now.
Those teasers and spy shots reveal that we can expect the new Camaro to evolve the look out of the outgoing fifth-generation model, introducing a more organic profile shape while introducing an even sharper snout.
Mechanically, the new Camaro will do away with the Zeta platform that underpinned its Australian-developed predecessor, replaced now with the Alpha architecture that holds up the new Cadillac ATS and CTS.
The switch will allow the new coupe to boast a lighter kerb weight and improved handling, while retaining the rear-wheel-drive layout that made the current model a fan favourite.
Those factors will be more crucial than ever for the new Camaro, as it looks to takes on the all-new and dramatically re-engineered Mustang, which claims to be the best-handling pony car ever to roll out of the Ford machine.
The new Mustang will hit Australia this year and, while GM opted to skip Australia with the current Camaro, the company has confirmed Holden will boast a “proper halo sports car” in the near future.
Whether that’s the new Camaro, however, remains to be seen.
