WASHINGTON: China’s premier space agency has indicated that it is planning to launch a mission to study the mysterious darker side of the moon.
The country is planning to execute the first landing on the darker side of the moon. The mission named, Chang’e 4 is scheduled to take off before 2020. The main objective of the probe will be to study the geological conditions on the darker side of the moon in order to determine the possibility of placing a radio telescope.
Zou Yongliao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ moon exploration department in a statement that such a radio telescope will help enhance human understanding of the universe. At present, radio transmissions from Earth are unable to reach the moon’s far side.
Chang’e 4 is a part of the China’s ambitious lunar exploration program named Chang’e after the mythical Chinese moon god. The country has earlier sent two probes into lunar orbit and landed a rover on the moon’s surface in
2013. The country is now planning an unmanned lander that will be capable of collecting two kilograms of lunar samples and bringing them back to earth.
