ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Miftah Ismail has said coal import had witnessed substantial surge due to its increased consumption in power plants, cement manufacturing units, Pakistan Steel and other industries.
Unveiling the Economic Survey of Pakistan here, he said presently indigenous coal production was mostly consumed by brick kilns, while a small quantity was utilized by Khanote Power Plant and cement factories.
Pakistan, he said, had fairly large indigenous coal resources (over 186 billion tons) which were sufficient to meet the energy requirements of the country on long-term sustainable basis. He said domestic production of coal was expected to increase in the coming years after start of mining activity at the Thar coalfield.
