KARACHI: Customs officials at Karachi sea port adopted go-slow policy due to closing of Pak-Afghan border.
According to details, on the account of Pak-Afghan trade, around 3,000 containers pass through the port per month. Customs officials said that this is a huge quantity and looking after them at the border is difficult for the department. So the operation at the port has been made slow.
The customs officials told Customs Today that 40% cargo of Pak-Afghan transit trade is through Karachi, Quetta and Chaman. The remaining 60% trade is through Peshawar, Torkham border.
The port charges Rs 5,000 per day for 40 feet container and Rs 2,500 for 20 feet container. These heavy charges of containers held at the border is distressing for exporters.
Whereas, after 18 days, the dead lock between the FC and the customs on the conflict of weighing is still unsolved.
