Corrupt officials at Peshawar Customs House to be investigated by KP NAB

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau Khyber PakhtunKhwa has decided to initiate an inquiry against the officials of the Customs House Peshawar for being involved in corrupt practices causing the treasury a loss of hundreds of millions rupees.

A Regional Board Meeting (RBM) of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was held under the chairmanship of Director General NAB (KP) Brigadier Farooq Naser Awan (R) on Tuesday at Peshawar.

The meeting was attended by Directors, Additional Directors, Case Officers, Senior Legal Consultants and other officers concerned.

The meeting authorized the inquiry against the officials of the Pakistan Customs Peshawar regarding the illegal clearance of luxury vehicles by mis-declaration of their specifications to reduce the applicable duty and taxes in return of receiving bribes/kickbacks.

During the initial security of the record, it was discovered that luxury vehicles of 3000-CC and above were declared of low specifications as per valuation rules causing low based price for calculation of duties and taxes.

Thus national economy suffered hundreds of millions of loss due to corruption made by the accused officers of the Pakistan Customs whose names were still not disclosed.

A full plea investigation will be conducted after which a reference will be filed against the accused officers after which an FIR will be submitted for the physical remand of the culprits.

The NAB KP has progressively arrested the corrupt officers who work as black sheep in the department of the Pakistan Customs. The NAB KP official informed Customs Today that there had been a number of complaints received against the irregularities being practiced.

The monitoring team, after initial investigation, presented the details to the DG NAB KP on Tuesday which, after scrutiny, will be further handed over for investigation.
