Custom Court awards 19 days imprisonment to suspect involved in currency smuggling case

KARACHI: Custom (Taxation and Anti-Smuggling) Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi awarded 19 days imprisonment and a Rs 150,000 fine to a suspect, Fahad Tayyab, who was arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband foreign currency from Dubai to Karachi.

During the hearing, the investigation officer produced the accused person before the court. The counsel for the accused filed an application for pleading guilty and left himself on the mercy of the court. After completion of both sides arguments, the court awarded 19 days (as already undergone period) imprisonment and Rs 150,000 fine to the accused person.

If payment of the fine is not paid by the accused/ applicant then he will suffer further 06 months simple imprisonment, order said.

According to the prosecution, on a credible information on mid night of 3th and 4th  November, 2016 staff of the customs authorities intercepted the accused person and during the examination recovered 1, 50, 000 Saudi Riyal from his possession.

Investigation officer had informed the court that during the investigation, it was proved that the above named accused person is involved in attempting to smuggle contraband foreign currency tentative value of Rs. 42, 00, 000.

He said that after the fulfilling all formalities case was registered against him as violation of section 2 (s) and 16 of the custom act 1969, punishable under clauses (8) (89) of the 156 (i) ibid read with notification of State Bank of Pakistan.
