Custom Court grants interim pre-arrest bail to accused in tax evasion case

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has granted interim pre-arrest bail to a suspect, Muhammad Shoaib, allegedly involved in a tax evasion case of Rs 737, 416.

During the hearing, the counsel for the accused submitted that applicant/accused is innocent and has been falsely implicated in this case. Therefore, the court may grant his bail. After the arrangements, the court granted bail to Shoaib against the surety bonds of Rs 200,000 and observed in its order that,“Without touching the merits of the case, ad-interim pre-arrest bail is granted to accused Muhammad Shoaib subject to furnish solvent surety in the sum of Rs 200,000.”

The court also directed the accused to join investigation if and when required by the investigation officer of the case, court issued notices to the special prosecutor customs and all police papers.

According to the prosecution, a case was registered by customs authorities against proprietor of Hassan International, Muhammad Shoaib alleged evasion of duty and taxes in the tune of Rs.737, 416/ violation of section 25, 32 (1) & (2) 32A, 79 of the customs act 1969, punishable section 156 (1) (14) (14A) of the custom act 1969 read with section 3, 6, 7A, 33, 34 of the sale tax act, 1990 and section 148 (1) of the income tax ordinance, 2001
