Customs Adjudication-I hears 4th tax evasion case of PTCL, Huawei

KARACHI: Customs Adjudication-I Collector Farid Iqbal Qureshi heard the tax evasion case of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), clearing agent Eastern Freighter Services and contractor Huawei Technologies in alleged involvement of mis-declaration of import of values.
According to the details, PTCL with help of clearing agent Eastern Freighter Services and its local contractor Huawei Technologies imported telecommunication equipment worth Rs2billion.
The departmental representatives of PTCL, contractor and Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation FBR submitted their counter comments before the Collector of Customs Adjudication-I Dr Farid Iqbal Qureshi during the hearing.

It was the fourth case of tax evasion against the M/s PTCL and three cases were already been decided in the Collectorate of Customs Adjudication-I and II.
Final judgment made by the Collector Syed Shahanshah Hasnain of the Customs Adjudication-I stated that “the Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL) shall deposit the recoverable amount of duty of Rs 100 million and Huawei Technologies shall pay a penalty of Rs 10 million”
“I also hereby to impose a penalty of Rs 5 million on clearing agent Eastern Freighter, who acted in connivance with Pakistan Telecommunication Limited in order to deprive the government by its legitimate revenue”.
The case was instituted by the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, Regional Office on 27 November, 2013.
