KARACHI: The Customs Court granted bail to suspect Asmat Ullah son of Khan Muhammad, who was arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle 9205 kilograms betel nuts under the cover load of gravel (crushed stones) etc.
On January 04, 2019, counsel for the accused filed bail petition and argued that his client is innocent and is falsely implicated in this case, who is giving assurance that he will appear on each and every date of hearing before the court, therefore, the court may grant his bill till final judgment in this case.
After the hearing, the court granted bail against the surety of Rs100,000 and directed him to appear before the court on next date of hearing.
According to the prosecution, on information, customs officials intercepted a Hino High Wall truck bearing registration no: TKE-349 arriving from Quetta to Karachi via Sindh and through Super Highway, Karachi and during the search recovered 9205 kg betel nuts under the cover load of gravel valuing Rs. 2,558,990. 2300 packets of Safina Brand Indian origin Gutkha, 1200 packets of One-2-One Brand Gutkha, 600 packets of Z-21 Gutkha made in India valuing to Rs6,682,000 and he was asked to produce any lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods were taken into custody and he was arrested by customs officials.
A case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156(2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under clause 89 of Section 156(1) ibid read with Section 3(1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
