Customs Court approves challan of Dunlop tyres smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court accepted interim charge sheet and issued non bailable warrants against suspects namely Abdul Jabbar and Mahmood, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle foreign origin branded tyres.

On March 15, 2019, investigation officer submitted interim charge sheet and informed the court that on an actionable information, customs officials intercepted passenger bus Al-Haris Mover Coach bearing registration no JB-1945 en-route from Quetta to Karachi.

He further informed the court that during the search, customs officials found 8 Thunderer brand tyres made in Thailand valuing Rs42,256,65 Dunlop brand tyres made in Japan valuing Rs343,330, 7  Wosidun tyres made in China valuing Rs143,031,770, dandas of Dunhill Blend Tobacco of London Ltd cigarettes valuing Rs1,331,040,470, betel nuts valuing Rs130,660, cloth worth Rs408,382 and other goods.

Investigation officer said that during the raid, a suspect Kaleem Ullah was asked to produce lawful documents, however, he failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, customs court seized above-mentioned goods along with passenger bus.

He stated that a suspect was sent to jail by this court, however, two suspects are still absconders and prosecution is trying its best to arrest them and they will be produced before the court when arrested, after the hearing, court accepted interim challan and issued non bailable warrants against absconding suspects.

According to the prosecution, a case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clauses 8 & 89 of Section 156 (i) ibid read with Section 3 (1) of Imports & Export Control Act, 1950.
