Customs Court approves charge sheet of Chines salt smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court issued non-bailable warrants against absconding suspects namely Abdul Majeed son of Muhammad Hussain and Muhammad Imran alias Faisal son of Hanif Memon, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 11,125 kilograms monosodium glutamate Chinese salt (Ajinomoto).

On May 28, 2019, investigation officer of customs preventive submitted charge sheet against the above mentioned suspects and informed that on an actionable information, customs team raided a godown situated at plot no 6, Rangiwara, Haddi Godown, near Sahara Pump, Chakiwara Road and found 445 PP bags each weighing 25 kilograms Chines salt (Ajinomoto) worth Rs 2,682,927.

He further submitted that during the investigation, efforts were undertaken to ascertain the business address of the accused involved in the crime with the help of the prosecution witness. The undersigned visited the Jodia Bazar along with prosecution witness, but it seemed Abdul Majeed and Muhammad Imran had absconded as the shop was shut down in business hours.

He said that in the view of foregoing facts and circumstances of the case it is established that accused have thus committed an offence in collusion with others under Section 2 (s) 156(2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clauses  89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (1) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950.

After the hearing, court accepted interim charge sheet and issued non-bailable warrants against both absconding suspects.

Names of Iftikhar Hassan Khan, inspector preventive service, Shabaz and Danish, sepoy’s were mentioned in charge sheet as witnesses.

According to the prosecution, a case was registered by Iftikhar Hassan Khan, inspector preventive service.
