Customs Court approves interim charge sheet in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court approved interim charge sheet and granted after arrest bail to suspects Samiullah son of Muhammad Ishaq, Ziaduddin son of Roziuddin and Najeed Ullah son of Muhammad Yousaf who were arrested in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid 3560 kilograms betel nuts worth Rs707,728.

On May 11, 2019, investigation officer submitted interim charge sheet against the above mentioned suspects and informed that customs officials intercepted one Hino mini truck bearing registration no: MNO-7288 Model 1990 and recovered 106 bags assorted size and weight 3560 kilograms foreign origin betel nuts worth Rs707,728.

He submitted that during the search, suspects failed to produce any lawful documents, therefore, goods along with truck were seized and suspects also were arrested by customs team.

During the hearing, counsel for the suspects moved after arrest bail applications and argued that they are innocents and have been falsely implicated in this case, therefore, court may grant their bail till final judgment in this case.

After the hearing, court accepted interim charge sheet and also granted after arrest bail to the above mentioned suspects and directed them to submit surety against Rs100,000 each and appear on next date of hearing without fail.

According to the prosecution, case was registered for violation of under Section 2(s) 156(2) 157(2) and 178 of customs act, 1969 punishable under Clause (8) (89) of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section 3 (i) of Imports and Export Control Act, 1950.
