Customs Court approves judicial remand of suspect booked in betel nuts smuggling case

KARACHI: The Customs Court sent suspect namely Syed Ullah son of Magual to Central Jail on judicial remand, who was absconder and involved in a case of attempting to smuggle contraband betel nuts and others goods.

On August 25, 2018, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned accused before the court and argued that on credible information, officials of Pakistan Rangers intercepted five Suzuki pick-ups loaded with betel nuts and other goods and informed the customs officials; therefore, customs officials reached there and searched the vehicles.

Investigation officer further informed that during the search customs officials found 20 cartons containing Rajni brand Indian-origin gutka, 90,000 pouches worth Rs1,350,000, 19 cartons containing Rajni brand gutka 85,500 pouches valuing at Rs1,282,500, 50 bags containing Safina brand gutka 26, 25000 pouches worth Rs3,937,500 17 bags containing betel nuts 1200 kilogram valuing at Rs291, 600.

He further submitted that show-cause notices have been issued and displayed on customs office against owners of vehicles as well as owners of said goods, accordingly, efforts are in progress to arrest the absconding accused persons and their associates.

Investigation officer argued that above-mentioned accused was absconder and arrested by customs officials and prosecution has completed investigation from him. He submitted that if court sent him to judicial remand than prosecution has no objection.

After the hearing, court sent him to jail on judicial remand and directed jail authority to produce him on next date of hearing before the court.

Case was registered for violation of under Section 2 (s) 156 (2) 157 (2) and 178 of Customs Act, 1969 punishable under Clause 8 & 89 of Section 156 (1) ibid read with Section (i) of Imports & Exports Control Act, 1950 and others related laws complainant by Muhammad Shafiq Senior Preventive Officer Customs House Karachi.
