KARACHI: The Customs Court has sent suspects namely Muhammad Akram son of Muhammad Ramzan and Raza Muhammad son of Khan Mir, who were booked in a case of attempting to smuggle non-duty paid contraband betel nuts and others goods, to custody in Pakistan Coast Guards on physical remand.
On July 17, 2018, Investigation Officer Muhammad Humayun produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that during a routine checking, officials of the Pakistan Coast Guards intercepted a Hino truck bearing registration number TK-806 and recovered 12,630 kilogram betel nuts and other goods.
He further informed that the suspects were asked to produce lawful documents of betel nuts and other goods, who failed to provide any legal documents; therefore, Pakistan Coast Guards officials seized the goods and Hino truck and also arrested the suspects. He submitted that prosecution needs further investigations; therefore, the court may send them on physical remand.
After the hearing, the court sent them to Pakistan Coast Guards on physical remand and directed investigation officer to produce the suspects before the court along with progress report on next date of hearing.
According to the prosecution, case was registered against the suspects for violation of under section 2 (s) and 16, 156 (1) (8) (89) and 157 of the Customs Act, 1969.
